Had 40 minutes before church so went to Starbucks. Thought I’d check on the City QPR game. Brought it up right as City tied it. And then saw the winner. What an amazing finish. I can’t imagine how United feels after being so close, but credit to City for continuing to press and getting it done. Hilarious that there are some who think you can’t get drama without a playoff. This was incredible.

I haven’t been able to watch the past few games of the Timbers due to my coaching schedule. I was today. I liked that there were some major line-up changes. I think it’s been clear that what they were trying wasn’t working so I’m glad to see that the staff was willing to try something different. I thought Futty played pretty well, especially for his first game back. Palmer was mostly invisible in the midfield, though didn’t make any egregious errors. Songo’o had some good moments, but wasn’t able to get consistent service. Jewsbury was okay in the back. His most notable moment, the ball he headed above the goal after Chabala cleared it off the line, was related directly to him not stepping to a player on a play he should have.
Overall I was pleased with the effort put forth by the Timbers. I thought the energy was good, particularly early in the game. There was, however, a distinct lack of composure in the final third. Too many times they would get the ball up the field only to lose it due to a through ball or cross to no one. I realize that they just put out a completely different line-up, but at some point you just have to produce. The announcers were talking about how Nagbe and Boyd have scored 2/3 of the Timbers’ goals this year. The part of that discussion that stood out to me was the fact that the Timbers have only scored 9 goals as a team this season. That is not going to win you many games, particularly when you consider that they have given up 7 in the last 15 minutes of games alone.
I thought this game was certainly an improvement from the debacle at Montreal, but there is still much improvement to be done. We are reaching the point in the season where I expect Boyd to start producing. He made some good runs today and got on the end of some crosses, but he needs to do better with those. He’s had too many not be on goal. I’m not expecting him to be a player to create a goal from nothing, but when he is served a ball in the box I expect him to redirect it on target. I also expect more from Nagbe. He slowed up too often today. He’s supposed to be a dynamic, creative attacking player. I think he has been better this year than he was last, but I still want more. He should be the “franchise” player for the Timbers. He needs to step up and start performing like that. I want to see him take players on and get shots off. He did half of that today. Other players weren’t especially notable. If the Timbers want to have a prayer of making the playoffs they need results and they need them now. One point isn’t going to cut it.

The problem is that Glee has bought into the myth of its own importance so thoroughly that it thinks raising an issue, then explaining what you should do in that situation, then going off to have Puck draw awesome rocker demons on his history final, is an adequate way to discuss serious topics. The show’s been doing this since the second season, but it’s grown even more pronounced this season. The series sees itself as a force for good in the world—and, yeah, if this episode helps one woman get out of an abusive relationship, that’s a good thing. But that doesn’t make the show good art or even good crappy television. It makes it painfully, woefully obvious art and crappy television.
